Apparently, our brains make more than 30,000 decisions every single day. These are predominantly by our non-conscious brains driven by habits and learned behaviours. Our brains are constantly deciding things for us even when we are in auto-pilot mode.
But what about those conscious and important (sometimes scary) decisions? You know, the ones we tend to delay, those we feel we aren't ready for yet, the decisions that deplete our energy from the very indecisiveness of it all??!
In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter if a decision turned out to be right or wrong based on our own or others' judgement? What matters is that a decision was made for what felt right at the time to experience, learn and continue to grow.
"What decisions do enable is fuel a sense of progress."
It’s amazing how our gut kind of knows what’s best for us. Decisions, especially big ones are already made instinctively knowing what’s best for our future selves. However, our brains are masterful in keeping us within our comfort zones, alerting how change can be risky and just delaying that decision YOU already know is the right one for you.
My personal experience:
I have been there fighting that battle internally till it got to a point where I took the decision but made it way harder for me than it needed to be. This was when I decided to quit my comfortable job last year. The time between the internal gut decision and my brain choosing to act on it was long and painful! I felt a disconnect with how I was living my life being true to my values and guiding purpose for my future. I made my life hard by delaying to decide and act on it! Fast forward to now, I am in a happier place and appreciative of how a neutral listening ear and guide could have helped me through that period.
I did eventually get on to counselling and coaching to help me transition to this next phase of my career and life. Could I have sought support sooner? Absolutely, but my brain aptly protected me from taking action by delaying! This experience is also what fuels me when coaching people who feel stuck in taking courageous steps toward their WHAT-IFS! I get it.
"What pending decision is making your life harder?"
Reminder that a decision can also be to decide to not change anything and accept things the way they are! That's a very good decision in itself. Not all decisions need to be life changing!
